Sexual Health Counseling |
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines sexual health as a state of physical, emotional, mental, and social well-being in relation to sexuality, and not merely the absence of disease, dysfunction or infirmity. In order to enjoy good sexual health, one needs to adopt a positive and respectful approach towards sexuality and sexual relationships that ensures that the ensuing sexual activity is free of coercion, discrimination, and violence.
The path to an improved sexual and reproductive health requires complete understanding of sexuality without any inhibitions as well as its possible impact on practices, partners, reproduction and pleasure.
The field of sexual health encompasses a range of issues, including: |
Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI’s), including HIV, and reproductive tract infections (RTI’s) |
Unintended pregnancy and unsafe abortion |
Infertility |
Sexual well-being (including sexual satisfaction, pleasure and dysfunction) |
Special Immunization plan for senior citizens, immuno-suppresed patients and cancer. |
Violence related to gender and sexuality |
Certain aspects of mental health |
The impact of physical disabilities and chronic illnesses on sexual health |
| |
Sexual well-being and reproductive health go hand-in-hand. Any intervention in one aspect results in positive impact in the other. Hence, to ensure overall reproductive and sexual wellbeing, we need to bring about a synergy between the two. The five core aspects of reproductive and sexual health are: |
| |
Improving antenatal, perinatal, postpartum and newborn care |
Providing high-quality services for family planning, including infertility services; eliminating unsafe abortion; |
Combating sexually transmitted infections including HIV, reproductive tract infections, cervical cancer and other gynaecological morbidities; and |
Promoting sexual health. |
