According to World Health Organization (WHO), an adolescent is a child between the ages of 10 years to 19 years. The advent of adolescence brings in its wake loads of confusion and rebellion in the minds of adolescents. An adolescent gets the first taste of adulthood, yet the child in him is reluctant to let go. He searches for an identity of his own, and constantly seeks guidance to find his path to adulthood. If guided by parents or experts, he makes an easy transition into adulthood free from any problems or diseases. However, if misguided, the rebellious adolescent falls prey to a host of problems such as substance abuse, depression, and sex-related illnesses. It is alarming to note that adolescents are at the centre of the HIV/AIDS pandemic with more than 50% of all new HIV infections occurring in young people aged 15-24 years.
Adolescent Care at Manipal Cure and Care provides access to information and expert advice related to the overall well-being of adolescent children. We believe that family plays an important role in shaping the future of adolescents, and hence, we encourage individual and group discussion between parents and their adolescents to help them understand each other better. Also, our panel of doctors and counselors work in tandem with adolescents and their families to create awareness, and encourage open dialogues about problems related to adolescence such as: depression, peer and parental pressures, alcohol abuse, drugs abuse, smoking, unsafe sexual intercourse, unplanned pregnancies, and sexually transmitted diseases.
