What are Dental Implants?

When one or multiple teeth are lost, they are replaced with artificial teeth. These may take adjacent teeth for support and become a bridge (or fixed artificial teeth), or they may take gum and ridge support and become a removable plastic denture.

The advanced method of replacing lost teeth is by inserting titanium rods into the jaw bone and fixing the teeth onto it to make the whole replacement just like normal dentition in its rigidity and strength. .

Dr. Baliga is a highly respected member of the prestigious Indian Association of Oral Implantologists.

By this method, the entire dentition can be restored along with restoring lost confidence, aesthetics, and chewing efficiency. This is the story of dental implants.

The Procedure

After examining the patient with dental x-rays, the procedure is carried out on the dental chair itself. Local anesthetic injection is given to make it painless. The drilling instrument creates gaps in the jaw bone into which implants are inserted. A period of 3 to 5 months is left for the implant to fuse with bone before teeth are fitted. But the latest versions of implants are designed for immediate teeth fitting .A single tooth implant surgery takes approximately 20 minutes. Pain killer and antibiotic tablets are prescribed

Safety Factor

Modern implant surgery is highly successful (upto 94%) and is a safe procedure. When implant fails, there is gum infection and progressive loosening of the artificial tooth that eventually results in tooth loss itself. It doesn?t lead to any harm to adjoining good teeth, bone or gums. Some of the reasons for failure are poor bone condition, heavy smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, poor maintenance, and last but not the least, improper technique followed by the surgeon while inserting the implants and while fixing the teeth.

Life of an Implant

The efficiency and the life of an implant can be reduced by factors such as:
- High standard of planning and execution of implant procedure treatment,
- Meticulous daily oral cleansing by the patient,
- Regular professional maintenance,
- Cessation of smoking
- Avoidance of overloading the teeth by chewing hard nuts, bones and tobacco can make implants durable.
In view of the high success of implant treatment, a dental implant is considered as a long lasting fixation that does not need to be changed.
